Honoring Lindsey K. Mathews

I am changing my last name. In the not so distant future, I will be Lindsey Mathews Cantu.

Simmer on that a bit.

As I mentioned, we discussed a lot prior to even getting in a relationship—changing my last name was definitely an early topic of conversation.

I grew up with divorced parents. I have done the whole hyphenated last name deal as a child and teenager. I have gone through school with a different last name than my guardians. I don’t recommend it. When I turned 18 and moved out, I dropped all the hyphenated names. I wanted to step into Lindsey Keeler Mathews, the name I was given when I first stepped foot here on earth. This was a big deal for me in establishing my identity, values, boundaries, and how I wanted to show up in this world. At the time, it was me taking responsibility for myself.

Fast forward to me, in this now moment, and I’m at peace with Lindsey K Mathews, AND I’m ready to step into Lindsey M Cantu.

I have this visual of the Russian stackable dolls, also known as babushka dolls. I will never lose the core of who I am or the essence of Lindsey K Mathews, while at the same time I’m ready to level up. I’m ready to step into a union of two souls becoming one.

When two souls come together as one, I view it as harmonizing. Each of us has values, belief systems, and goals. We each have masculine and feminine energy within us. And, coming together we create our values, belief systems, and goals together. At the same time, we navigate life’s obstacles and celebrations through consistently harmonizing the masculine and feminine energy dynamic that is alive within our relationship container. Lance and I are harmonizing our relationship container.

Yes, I have given the name change a lot of thought. Hello, my name is a website and up to this point in my adult life I have been known as Lindsey K Mathews. The name change is not only important to Lance, but to me as well. In my opinion, this signifies coming together and committing to each other to create our own little family. It is establishing a foundation of togetherness and as one unit, which is important to each of us as we are open to children, and we want us all to have the same last name.

I love my name Lindsey K Mathews, AND I’m ready to step into Lindsey M Cantu.

For those of you that are in a similar situation as me, I recommend that you deeply consider what a name change means to both of you. Yes, it’s an old tradition with various reasons why. Just like with anything in life you can determine your own reasons as to why you want to change your name or not. I love traditions, AND I also love exploring the reasoning behind traditions to see if I want to keep them in my life or let them go. You have the freedom to do the same.

If you’re changing your name like me, I’d recommend honoring your maiden name in some way. For example, I have a business with Keeler in the name. It makes me smile every time I see it on documents or bank accounts. It’s a reminder of what’s inside of me.

And note, this website won’t change. I’m changing my name legally, but some things like this website won’t change, but my Instagram has been updated and some of my other professional affiliations have already been updated. I’ll keep writing “Lindsey Mathews Cantu or Lindsey M Cantu” for a while until I feel this community has gotten the hang of it. Moving forward I’ll sign off with “LC.”

Thank you for being with me in my chapter as “Lindsey K Mathews” and I hope you continue with me as I step into “Lindsey M Cantu.”

XO,

LC
